Beer Industry: Pours $223 Billion Into US Annually

A new economic impact survey, conducted by John Dunham & Associates, based in New York, found that brewers, beer importers, beer distributors, brewer suppliers and retailers, directly and indirectly contributes $13.2 billion annually to New York’s economy. The report was licensed by The National Beer Wholesalers Association (NBWA).

Here are some actual numbers:

1. 99,178 Jobs in New York Exclusively (Brewers, Distributors)
2. $4.6 Billion in Wages (Aggregate) (New york state)
3. $2.8 billion In Occupation, Personal and Economic consumption Taxes (New york state)
4. 51,858 Vendors (NY)

“As independent businesses, America’s 3,300 licensed beer distributors are proud to provide more than 98,000 quality jobs with solid wages and great benefits to employees in every state and congressional district across the country,” said Larry Del Papa, president and CEO of Del Papa Distributing Company, Inc. in Galveston, Texas, and chairperson of NBWA. “Beer distributors are deeply rooted in their local markets, so it’s only natural that they work hard to keep their communities safe especially by fighting underage drinking and drunk driving.”

But, if you think those numbers are big, just take a look at the beer business on a (US) national level. Every year, the beer industry plays a critical function in the U.S. economy by contributing $223 billion, annually. It provides Americans with 1.8 million jobs, and provides over $71 billion in wages paid. As a whole, the beer industry also paid $44.7 billion in personal, business and consumption taxes. Consumption taxes included $3.6 billion in federal excise taxes and $1.7 billion in state excise taxes and $5.9 billion in state and local sales taxes.

The beer industry is also cited for their critical function in promoting responsible intake of its products. Every year, brewers, importers, and autonomous beer distributors, accredited at both the state and fed levels, commit substantial resources to produce public safety, instruction and prevention campaigns and to advance federal and local programs to assist cut down minor boozing and intoxicated driving.

“In addition to providing prime jobs with strong wages, the three-tier beer dispersion system of rules provides transparency and accountability while offering American consumers with terrific selection and assortment almost 13,000 different labels of beer at a large value,” added NBWA President Craig Purser. “This tried and true, efficient scheme of state controls, in which America’s beer distributors represent a vital purpose, works to guarantee alcoholic beverages are sold exclusively to accredited retailers who in turn are responsible for marketing only to adults of legal drinking age,” added NBWA Chair Craig Purser.
